LEONARDO MONTECCHIA

Leonardo Montecchia conceives dance as a tool for thought.

Each of his creations could be seen as a photograph, a freeze-frame of an experience in motion.

The choreographer likes to explore new paths.

His dual career as a dancer and actor often leads him to combine text, acting and dance in his creations.

Humor is one of his favorite ways to deal with seriousness.

After training and working as an actor and dancer in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Leonardo Montecchia moved to France in 1998, thanks to a scholarship from the Antorchas Foundation and the French Embassy in Argentina. This scholarship allowed him to obtain a Bachelor's degree in Performing Arts with a dance option at the University of Paris VIII. He then continued his training with Mathilde Monnier, as part of the Professional Training program at the Montpellier Choreographic Center in 2001.

He began his career as a choreographer by composing two creations: La Cravate (2001) and duO2 (2002). In 2004, he created the Compagnie de la Mentira, within which he composed several pieces where dance and text intertwine: Le MenSonge (2003), Potosi, la montagne d'argent (2005), Intimidité (2006), Patético (2006), French Kiss (2007), Tout va bien et Entrelacés (2008), Le Nombril (2010), Tango Paradoxe (2011), Tout Terrain (2014), In-Utile (2016), Un âge certain (2019).

In 2005, in Montpellier, he created the concept of "Hors Lits," performances in apartments that allowed for experimentation and close encounters with the public. Since then, "Hors Lits" have been established in 40 cities in France and abroad.

In 2008, he followed the “Transforme” program directed by Myriam Gourfynk, at the Royaumont Foundation, which allowed him to begin a research process on the notion of choreographic writing.

Alongside his career as a dancer and choreographer, Leonardo Montecchia teaches choreographic composition and Tango-contact, giving workshops in Europe and Latin America. He also leads numerous dance workshops for various amateur audiences - the elderly, the disabled, adolescents, students, or schoolchildren - and strives to enhance the potential of each individual and guide them through the experience of movement, towards the discovery and feeling of another possible body.

In 2015/17 he was an artist in residence at the University of Montpellier, where he created the choreographic journey “In-Utile”.

He currently works as a choreographer, director and teacher for the Compagnie de la Mentira; as a choreographer, performer and teacher for several companies and institutions in France and abroad.
