ETIENNE GENTIL
French national, born in 1970 in Algiers. After studying mathematics and practicing mountaineering, he arrived in Montpellier. A lover of medieval architecture and very mineral constructions, he began his professional activity in the 90s. Initially, in the renovation of old buildings, quickly in the restoration of heritage and then in construction.
The guiding principle of his work has always been primarily the ecological dimension. He has had the privilege of working on the restoration of around ten private mansions in the historic center of Montpellier and a medieval castle, remarkable buildings often listed as historic monuments. As part of operations planned and subsidized by the town hall for the restoration of the historic center of Montpellier, he has renovated entire apartment buildings.
The direction of his work was self-evident: ecology in construction, ecology in professional relationships as a search for well-being at work.
Alongside this professional career, he was part of the Théâtre au Présent theatre company for 8 years, directed by Yves Gourmelon, as a performer in the company's annual plays. In 2008 he participated in the creation of Fuero(n) by Germana Civera, on stage at the Théâtre Chai du Terral as part of the Montpellier Danse Festival.
He has lived between Montpellier and Lisbon since 2014.
In 2017 he participated in the artistic project for families “Mutirão”, as a builder, creator and performer, co-produced by Culturgest and Coletivo Lagoa in Lisbon, and presented in the gardens of Culturgest in June and July 2017. In this context he organized with Sara Jaleco a week of artistic workshops for children, under the theme “Body and construction”. In July 2017 he was invited by the event “Alagar”, organized by Lagoa, to co-host a meeting/debate on oil. He regularly practices contemporary dance as a personal research and connection to others.
Since 2018 he has been part of the artistic team of the creation TransHumÂncia (2020), first as a builder, performer (Festival BI, Lisboa 2018 and Festival Linha de F uga, Coimbra 2018), then later as a thinker.
